‘Blue Eye Samurai,’ ‘Jim Henson Idea Man,’ Marvel Studios Among Early, Juried Category Emmy Winners

Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai” has taken the early lead at this year’s Primetime Emmys, landing three awards as the Television Academy announced this year’s winners in the animation, costume, innovation in emerging media programming and motion design

Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai” has taken the early lead at this year’s Primetime Emmys, landing three awards as the Television Academy announced this year’s winners in the animation, costume, innovation in emerging media programming and motion design. HBO/Max leads in network tallies so far with four (via “Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music,” “Scavengers Reign,” “Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake” and “Clone High”).

The juried category entrants are screened by a panel of professionals in their respective peer groups (Animation, Costume Design, Emerging Media Programming, and Motion and Title Design). And each category has the possibility of one, more than one or no entry winning an Emmy.

That’s why there were no nominees in these categories — instead, a one-step evaluation and voting procedure via “open discussions of each entrant’s work with a thorough review of the merits of awarding the Emmy.”

Juried awards will be presented during the 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. (An edited version of the full Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies will air Saturday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. on FXX.)
