Rishi Sunak has doubled down on naming Scottish nationalism in a list of threats to the UK after furious SNP leaders complained they had been lumped in with global extremists.

In a speech on national security earlier this week, the Prime Minister warned that an “axis of authoritarian powers”including China, Russia and North Koreawere seeking to undermine Britain.

He then went on to list other groups who were undermining the UK’s integrity, namechecking “gender activists hijacking children’s sex education” and “Scottish nationalists who are even trying to tear our United Kingdom apart”.

The intervention prompted outrage from senior SNP figures, with John Swinney, the new First Minister, urging Mr Sunak to apologise for the “foolish remarks”.

Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s Westminster leader, raised the comments at Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons and claimed Mr Sunak had “compared almost half of his Scottish population” who backed independence “with a war criminal like Vladimir Putin”.

He added: “He did so as their Prime Ministeras the man who represents them on the world stage, and the man who on these isles is tasked with defending their liberties and their democracy.”

After Mr Flynn challenged him to apologise, Mr Sunak replied: “That’s not what I said, but I would say to the honourable gentleman that his party is indeed a threat to the integrity of the United Kingdom, and I hate to remind him that is literally their entire purpose.

“Because when the people of Scotland accepted the referendum in 2014, it was the SNP who didn’t. They went on creating a minister for independence, focused on constitutional wrangling, ignoring the needs of the people.
