Equestrian rider Georgie Campbell has died aged 37 following a “horrific” fall during an event in the UK on Sunday.

“It is with deepest regret that we announce that Georgie Campbell suffered a fatal accident whilst competing,” British Eventing said.

“Medical professionals attended immediately following her fall at fence 5b however, unfortunately, she could not be saved.

“The horse Global Quest was assessed by the on-site vets and walked back to the stable and is uninjured.

“To respect the family’s privacy at this extremely difficult and sad time, no further details will be shared.”

The tragedy is being felt across the sport and the world.

Campbell’s husband Jesse is a fellow rider who represented New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

The couple, married in December 2020, competed with their own outfit as Team Campbell Eventing based in the UK.

Campbell represented Great Britain at international-level equestrian events, including the Nations Cup.

She notched up more than 200 appearances and won six times.

Equestrian photographer Paige Beattie said she rushed to help Campbell however she could before medical personnel took over.

“I write this post in shock. What happened today at Bicton was nothing short of horrific,” Beattie wrote.

“I was photographing the water complex when Georgie Campbell tragically suffered a fatal fall.

“This meant I was one of the first on scene shortly followed by the amazing medical team at Bicton.

“This isn’t me — today is an extremely tragic day which will be remembered forever. What a stark reminder of just how dangerous this sport is.

“My thoughts are with Georgie’s husband, family, friends and others affected by this tragic accident. Never in a million years did I think I’d ever witness something like that.
