A 13-year-old boy has been charged with carrying a knife and assaulting a police officer in Scotland.

It is understood teaching staff alerted a community police officer based at the Dalkeith school in Midlothian on Monday in response to a rumour a teenager may have been carrying a knife.

A boy was then reportedly approached by the officer at nearby Mayfield Park in the town during the school day.
