New video shows the erratic path an 8-year-old girl from Ohio took when she drove to Target by herself after taking her mom's car

New video shows the erratic path an 8-year-old girl from Ohio took when she drove to Target by herself after taking her mom's car.

Dashcam video taken by passing motorist Justin Kimery showed a white Nissan Rogue moving erratically on the road on Sunday, Sept. 15. As he witnessed the SUV swerving, the video showed Kimery contacting a dispatcher.

“There’s a guy in a car, he’s like right behind me,” Kimery can be heard saying in the footage, per NBC affiliate WSAZ. “He’s swerving all over, he’s swerving everywhere like in all the lanes.”

Later in the footage, as he continued driving on the same road behind the SUV and stayed on the line with dispatchers, Kimery said: “It looks like a kid.”

PEOPLE reached out to the Bedford Police department on Wednesday, Sept. 18, about the new dashcam footage and said they were aware of it. They previously told PEOPLE they had no police dashcam video of the incident.

In an interview with The New York Times published on Tuesday, Sept. 17, Kimery, who was en route to his job at the time, said he contacted authorities assuming the driver was either medically impaired or under the influence.

“I tried to signal her to slow down or stop if possible, and she just kept going,” Kimery wrote in an to the newspaper.

In an incident report provided to PEOPLE on Monday, Sept. 16, Bedford Police confirmed that an 8-year-old girl was behind the wheel.

According to the report, officers arrived at a home in Bedford around 9:15 a.m., Sept. 15, after being notified of a missing juvenile and a 2020 Nissan Rogue.  Authorities said that the girl’s family members last saw her about two hours earlier.  A neighbor’s ring camera footage showed the girl leaving the residence and then driving off in the SUV alone.

Police added in their report that the girl was later found safe at a Target store in Bainbridge. Her relatives then came to pick her up.

The girl told authorities that she hit a mailbox during the trip to the store, per the police incident report.

Fox affiliate WJW reported that police are not criminally charging the girl because of her age.

In a Facebook post, Bedford Police shared a cheeky statement about the incident.

“An 8 year old took mommy’s car this morning and drove to Target in Bainbridge to shop. Thankfully she made it and was immediately located by Bainbridge Police," police wrote.

“She’s now home safe,” they continued. ”Not sure what she bought, or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%. We did let her finish her Frappuccino. We’re not mean.”

PEOPLE contacted the girl’s mother on Thursday, Sept. 19, for additional comment.
