Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg have had their Monaco Grand Prix qualifying result wiped by the FIA due to a rear wing infringement on both of their cars.

The American F1 team are aiming to close the gap to RB in the Constructors' Championship and brought some new upgrades to Monte Carlo in the hope of gaining more ground.


Hulkenberg and Magnussen ended up qualifying 12th and 15h respectively with the former just over one-tenth from making it into Q3.

But both drivers will now start from the back of the grid on Sunday after it was discovered their new rear wing was not legal.



A post-qualifying inspection of the cars in the paddock led to a further investigation into Haas.

“The uppermost rear wing element adjustable positions were checked on car numbers 20 Magnussen and 27 Hulkenberg," FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer said.

"The left-hand side and right-hand side outermost area of the of the adjustable elements were exceeding the maximum allowed 85mm on both cars.

“As this is not in compliance with Technical Regulations Article 3.10.10 h), I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”

The stewards later concluded that Haas did not comply with the rules as the rear wing element exceeded the maximum allowed measurement.

“The Technical Delegate discovered on examination that the uppermost rear wing element adjustable positions exceeded the maximum allowed under Article 3.10.10.h of the Technical Regulations of 85mm," the stewards wrote.

“The team explained that this was the consequence of an inadvertent error on their part in setting the wing flap gap.

"The wing used was a new design that was used for the first time in Monaco.



“The old design was set to be compliant with the regulations with the largest gap measured from the centre of the wing.

"Under the new design, the largest gap was at the extremities of the wing but the team had not trained its mechanics to set the gap per the new design, resulting in the non-compliance.”

The FIA said they were 'satisfied with the team’s explanation for the error'.

Both cars will now start from the back of the grid on Sunday, denting their hopes of picking up more valuable points.

Charles Leclerc will start on pole ahead of Oscar Piastri with Max Verstappen down in fifth.
