Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has told fans they have to want Liverpool to beat Aston Villa on Monday to aid their Premier League title challenge.

Villa Park will be bouncing for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side as a win will guarantee a top-four finish and Champions League football in the west Midlands next season.

Such a scenario would lead to Tottenham having practically nothing to play for when they host Manchester City a day later, a game in which Arsenal will be praying for their neighbours to take a result from the defending champions.

“We played to save, playing backwards and we didn’t create the threat we wanted.

“Because of that it became open but we defended so well.

“The [clean sheet is down to the] attitude of the whole team, look at Kai [Havertz] chasing the ball, it’s a collective thing.

“You want to play better, especially the second half, but that’s another step the team has to take. It was high stakes, it was the same at Spurs, so credit to the boys.”

William Saliba 7

Solid and made an important challenge to stop Garnacho in his tracks in the second half.

Bukayo Saka 5

Very quiet by his standards, particularly in the first half, and was not involved in any big moments of note.

Amad Diallo 7

Comfortable and elegant in possession and worked hard up and down the right flank. Shame he was forced off injured with 20 minutes to go.

Casemiro 4

Played Kai Havertz a mile onside for the opening goal and then failed to track the run of Trossard. It was to prove the decisive error of the match.
