Ukraine has accused Russian forces of using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service to coordinate attacks against its soldiers.

Kyiv released an audio clip in which it said soldiers from Russia’s 83rd Air Assault Brigade can be heard discussing setting up a Starlink system near the frontline in its eastern Donbas region.

“Yes, there are cases of Russian occupants using these devices. This is starting to become systemic,” said Andriy Yusov, a Ukrainian military spokesman.

Ukraine’s military did not give any more details on how the Russian military may be using Starlink but reports and photos have surfaced in the US and Ukraine in recent months of sightings of Russian forces with Starlink equipment.

An unnamed Ukrainian military source told the US website defenseone dozens of Starlink units were being used by Russians along the frontline.

“When they have hundreds, it’ll be hard for us to live,” the source said.

SpaceX said that it does not conduct business with the Russian government and said Starlink does not work in the country. However, Russia is accused of using Starlink in parts of occupied Ukraine.

“If SpaceX obtains knowledge that a Starlink terminal is being used by a sanctioned or unauthorised party, we investigate the claim and take actions to deactivate the terminal if confirmed,” it said on Thursday.
