A solar eclipse will sweep across a portion of the United States next month. In Alabama, the moon will cover 84% of the sun.
Here are a few things you need to know the eclipse.
The 2024 eclipse will be at total coverage for four minutes and 28 seconds.
The next total solar eclipse in the United States won't arrive until Aug. 12, 2045, and will hit totality for six minutes.

The greatest eclipse will be in Mexico, but in the United States, Texas, Arkansas and Kentucky will be the closest states to seeing full coverage.
“If you can get anywhere close to any of those areas, it is well worth your time," Tinker said.
“Do not, do not, do not, do not, do not look directly at the sun," Tinker said.
The only way to stay safe is to avoid looking at the sun or to use solar-safe glasses. Tinker warned not to use two pairs of sunglasses or smoke glasses.
“Just don’t," Tinker said.
Solar-safe glasses must have an ISO of 12312-2. Tinker also warned that just because a company lists the ISO number on the glasses does not mean that they are safe.
He advised to go to NASA or the American Astronomical Society's websites, where they can find a list of companies that meet the ISO standard and have been verified. can also buy them at the planetarium's gift show with a limit of four glasses per person.
Welding glasses will also protect 's eyes if they are at a 13 or 14.
Tinker said to be sure to check if there are scratches of pinholes in the glasses before using them. “I don’t care if it cost you $10, throw it away," Tinker said.
At the planetarium, Tinker will have a paid show at 10 a.m. April 8 for a maximum of 150 .
